Every decade has a fad, or generally, multiple fads, that everyone determines is a great idea and must do. In recent years, suddenly tanning became that fad, and the general population decided to be tan was to be healthy.

Lying out in the sun, oiling up with tanning oil, and staying there for hours on end meant a nice dark look. Dark skin meant healthy skin and a healthy body, right?

Quite the contrary. Though it could be a bit of a stretch to compare lying in the sun with tanning oil to a basting chicken in a rotisserie, it is a bit of the same concept. Tanning, in truth  is not healthy, dark skin is not good, and oiling up for a better tan only makes things worse. Hanging out below the sun too long, namely without any protective sunscreen, will do major damage to your skin. So going to a tanning salon is virtually no different than lying underneath the sun for an hour or two. For a long time people were underneath the impression that because you were out of the sun, you were safe from UV rays and consequently safe from skin cancer.

However, in recent years, the truth has come out about tanning beds and have since become referred to by some people as cancer boxes. You will have to accept the facts –  there is no safe tan.

At least, there is no safe tan when it comes to obtaining a tan through the use of light. You can always buy sunless tanning products such as sprays or creams, or bronzers such as powders for your face.

These will give you the darker look you crave in order to appear what everyone claims as healthy. If beauty is only skin deep, once you damage that skin, what will you have to fall back on?

The important thing to remember is that a tan doesn’t equal a healthy body or mind. A tan is just one more superficial thing that people have embraced without any solid reasons. There used to be a time when pale, ivory skin was considered beautiful.

Introduction  -

Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It’s also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will create skin cancer at least once.

Skin cancer – the abnormal growth of skin cells – most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. But this common form of cancer can also occur on areas of the skin not normally exposed to sunlight.

There are three major kinds of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell carcinomas and most squamous cell carcinomas are slow growing and highly treatable, particularly if found early.

What are the causes of skin cancer?

If exposure to sunlight continues for several years, the damaged skin has an increased chance of developing one of the forms of skin cancer. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of developing these cancers (although it could not be the only cause of the disease). While the valid relationship is not 100% defined, it appears that intermittent (occasional) exposure and exposure during childhood and adolescence are likely important predictors for basal cell carcinoma, and cutaneous malignant melanoma.

Exposure To Carcinogenic Factors

A) Ultraviolet light – Basal cell cancers are more related to intermittent sun exposure and sunburns specifically in childhood and adolescence.

B) Ionizing radiation such as radiotherapy might also increase of skin cancers.

C) Chemicals such as arsenic increase the risk of skin cancers. Exposure is usually chronic and at low concentrations.

Genetic Syndromes

There are a number of genetic syndromes which increase the risk of skin cancers. These include xeroderma pigmentosa which is a defect in DNA repair. This condition is associated with sun sensitivity, extensive freckling and the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers is almost 5,000 times that of the normal population.

Basal cell carcinomas are increased in the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome as well as Gorlin’s syndrome.

Xeroderma pigmentosum –  This very rare hereditary disease makes it difficult for the skin to repair DNA damage from UV light. Xeroderma pigmentosum patients typically suffer many skin cancers, which may start in childhood.

Basal cell nevus syndrome –  People born with this rare condition create multiple basal cell carcinomas and other health problems.

Lowered immunity –  People whose immune system is diminished because of HIV infection, drugs that prevent rejection of donor organs or chemotherapy are at increased risk for non-melanoma skin cancer.

Pre- Application

(a) If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before applying to the entire body. If a reaction develops do not use.

(b) Exfoliate thoroughly and preferably for 2-3 days prior to the self tan application. This will give a smoother surface for the fake tan to be applied and will prevent the tan becoming patchy and uneven.

(c) Moisturise on a daily basis, preferable using a moisturiser that is from the same brand as the self tanning product. Avoid oil based moisturisers which could prevent absorption of self tanning products making them patchy and uneven.

(d) Remove any unwanted hair at least 24 hours before applying the self tan.

(e) Remove hard skin from heels of feet.

Before You Start

(a) Remove all traces of make up with a non oil based cleanser or make up remover.

(b) Remove jewellery.

(c) Do not wear perfume, deodorant or oil based body lotion.

Application Instructions

Step 1 –  Exfoliating

Exfoliate the entire body using a generous amount of exfoliating product, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, hands, feet and ankles. Once the product has been rubbed thoroughly into the skin it can either be mitted, sponged or rinsed off. Dry the skin thoroughly.

Step 2 –  Moisturising

Apply moisturising body lotion all over the body, paying particular attention to drier areas including the elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hands. Leave to absorb thoroughly.

Step 3 –  Self Tan Application

(a) Wear gloves to protect the hands from staining.

(b) Apply a small amount of fake tan to the fingertips, and apply to the face in small circular movements. Blend the product over the entire face, as if applying foundation. (c) Apply minimum product around the eyebrows and hair line, to the ears and behind the ears.

(d) Apply the product evenly to the neck and shoulders, again working in small circular movements down towards the arms.

(e) Bend the elbows, and apply minimum product to elbows working down towards the lower arm and apply evenly.

(f) Apply product to breast area if required working down towards the stomach.

Bend knees and sweep only minimum product over knees.

(g) Apply a generous amount of product evenly to upper and lower legs but again using minimum products over the ankle.

(h) Sweep minimal fake tan over the feet, avoiding contact with the nails and soles of the feet as this may cause staining.

(i) Ask someone to help you apply self tan to your back.

(j) Be certain to take off one glove and sweep it across the other hand. Be certain to take off the second glove and sweep it over the other hand gently. Avoid getting product on the nail plate and palms of the hands as this causes staining.

Step4 –  Allow to dry thoroughly without coming into contact with water

While Tan Develops

(a) Wear loose clothing and no footwear if possible

(b) Prevent perspiration by avoiding exercise and heat

(c) Make sure to keep the skin completely dry

(d) Do not apply any other toiletries or beauty products

(e) Do not shower for at least 6-8 hours. Preferably apply before bed and shower in the morning.

After the tan has developed avoid using the following beauty products –

(a) Harsh exfoliating products and facial scrubs

(b) Products that contain AHA’s

(c) Body brushes / loofahs / mitts

Gently pat the skin dry after showering, do not rub. Avoid excessive use of soaps. Avoid waxing, shaving or bleaching. Avoid swimming as this will shorten the life of the tan, and will lighten the colour.

Instead, I took a towel out into the hot sun, climbed up on the roof and began to tan naturally. Of course, I didn’t tan, I burned. But I was a teenager, and I was stubborn, and as soon as the burn had peeled away, I did it again. This was a consistent story throughout my teenage years.

Would I have benefited as a teenager for being allowed to use a tanning bed? Probably not if I’d been given free reign to use one at my leisure (say if we had gotten one for our own home). But, given the right supervision and education in tanning procedures, I probably would have harmed the health of my skin a lot less if I was using a tanning bed than I did by abusing the sun.
